1 Peter 5
The Shepherd’s Charge and the Call to Humble Vigilance
To exhort church elders to shepherd God’s flock with willing humility and to call all believers to mutual submission, steadfast faith, and humble dependence on God’s sustaining grace amid suffering and spiritual opposition.
This chapter closes Peter’s epistle with pastoral exhortations to elders and the whole church. Elders are urged to shepherd not out of compulsion or greed but as examples, looking forward to the crown of glory from the Chief Shepherd. Younger believers are called to submit to elders and to one another with humility, for God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Believers are encouraged to cast their anxieties on God, remain sober and vigilant against the devil’s attacks, and resist steadfastly in faith, knowing suffering is shared worldwide. The God of all grace will restore and strengthen them after suffering. The letter closes with greetings and a benediction of peace in Christ.
Event Description
Peter, himself an elder and witness of Christ’s sufferings and future glory, calls the elders among the believers to shepherd God’s flock. He emphasizes the manner of their oversight: not under compulsion or for dishonest gain, but willingly and eagerly. Elders are not to lord over God’s heritage but to be examples to the flock. The promise of a crown of unfading glory awaits them when the Chief Shepherd appears.
Central Themes
Pastoral responsibility as a willing service
Leadership by example, not domination
The future reward of faithful shepherding
Cultural & Historical Context
In the early church, elders held spiritual authority and pastoral oversight. Peter’s exhortation contrasts worldly leadership marked by coercion or greed with Christlike shepherding marked by humility and self-sacrifice. The concept of a 'crown of glory' echoes Jewish and early Christian motifs of eternal reward for faithful service (cf. 2 Timothy 4:8).
