Daniel 10 · Berean Standard Bible
1In the third year of Cyrus king of Persia, a message was revealed to Daniel, who was called Belteshazzar. The message was true, and it concerned a great conflict. And the understanding of the message was given to him in a vision. 2In those days I, Daniel, was mourning for three full weeks. 3I ate no rich food, no meat or wine entered my mouth, and I did not anoint myself with oil until the three weeks were completed. 4On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was standing on the bank of the great river, the Tigris, 5I lifted up my eyes, and behold, there was a certain man dressed in linen, with a belt of fine gold from Uphaz around his waist. 6His body was like beryl, his face like the brilliance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches, his arms and legs like the gleam of polished bronze, and his voice like the sound of a multitude. 7Only I, Daniel, saw the vision; the men with me did not see it, but a great terror fell upon them, and they ran and hid themselves. 8So I was left alone, gazing at this great vision. No strength remained in me; my face grew deathly pale, and I was powerless. 9I heard the sound of his words, and as I listened, I fell into a deep sleep, with my face to the ground. 10Suddenly, a hand touched me and set me trembling on my hands and knees. 11He said to me, “Daniel, you are a man who is highly precious. Consider carefully the words that I am about to say to you. Stand up, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he had said this to me, I stood up trembling. 12“Do not be afraid, Daniel,” he said, “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to them. 13However, the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for twenty-one days. Then Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia. 14Now I have come to explain to you what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision concerns those days.” 15While he was speaking these words to me, I set my face toward the ground and became speechless. 16And suddenly one with the likeness of a man touched my lips, and I opened my mouth and said to the one standing before me, “My lord, because of the vision, I am overcome with anguish, and I have no strength. 17How can I, your servant, speak with you, my lord? Now I have no strength, nor is any breath left in me.” 18Again the one with the likeness of a man touched me and strengthened me. 19“Do not be afraid, you who are highly precious,” he said. “Peace be with you! Be strong now; be very strong!” As he spoke with me, I was strengthened and said, “Speak, my lord, for you have strengthened me.” 20“Do you know why I have come to you?” he said. “I must return at once to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I have gone forth, behold, the prince of Greece will come. 21But first I will tell you what is inscribed in the Book of Truth. Yet no one has the courage to support me against these, except Michael your prince.

Objective

To reveal the profound spiritual realities behind earthly events through Daniel’s vision, emphasizing divine communication, angelic warfare, and God’s sovereign plan for His people amid opposition.

Overview

Daniel mourns and fasts for three weeks seeking understanding. By the great river Hiddekel, he beholds a majestic heavenly figure whose radiant presence overwhelms him. This messenger reveals a spiritual battle behind earthly kingdoms, describing opposition from the 'prince of Persia' and the aid of Michael, the chief prince. The vision prepares Daniel for revelations concerning the future of his people, underscoring the reality of unseen spiritual forces and God’s sovereign control.

Detailed Analysis

Event Description

Daniel mourns deeply for three full weeks, abstaining from pleasant food, meat, wine, and even anointing himself. This intense period of fasting and prayer marks his earnest seeking of God’s revelation. On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, by the river Hiddekel, Daniel lifts his eyes and sees a glorious man clothed in linen, girded with gold, his body radiant like beryl, face like lightning, eyes like flaming lamps, arms and feet gleaming like polished brass, and a voice like the sound of a multitude. Daniel’s companions see nothing but flee in terror, leaving Daniel alone to behold this vision, which exhausts him until he is weak and overwhelmed.

Central Themes

The earnest pursuit of divine understanding through mourning and fasting

God’s revelation often comes through overwhelming, awe-inspiring visions

The loneliness and vulnerability of prophetic encounter

Cultural & Historical Context

Daniel’s fasting and mourning reflect Jewish practices of penitence and seeking God’s favor during times of crisis (cf. Ezra 8:21; Joel 2:12). The river Hiddekel (Tigris) situates the vision in the Persian empire’s heartland. The description of the heavenly figure echoes priestly and prophetic imagery of divine glory and angelic beings (cf. Ezekiel 1; Revelation 1).

Key Verse

Daniel 10:5-6

Vivid Artistic Descriptions

Daniel’s Mourning and Preparation for Revelation

A solitary figure by a great flowing river under a pale dawn sky, eyes lifted in longing. Around him, the shadows of three weeks of fasting and mourning press inward, a veil of solemnity and yearning. The air shimmers faintly as a radiant figure clothed in gleaming linen appears, crowned with golden girdle, face flashing like lightning, eyes burning like twin lamps, arms and feet glowing with polished brass, and a voice like a roaring multitude breaking the silence.

The Angelic Commission and Spiritual Conflict

Behind the radiant messenger, a shadowy battlefield of unseen forces unfolds. Ethereal figures clash in a cosmic struggle—one dark prince resisting, another bright warrior named Michael advancing to aid. The scene pulses with tension, light and darkness weaving in a celestial dance, as the messenger stands firm, bearing the weight of divine commission and spiritual warfare.

Daniel’s Weakness and Divine Strengthening

Daniel collapsed on the ground, face to earth, drained and silent, a fragile human amid overwhelming glory. A luminous hand reaches down, touching his lips gently, infusing peace and strength. Around him, the oppressive weight of the vision lifts, replaced by a calm radiance that steadies his trembling form, symbolizing God’s empowering grace in human frailty.

The Promise of Future Revelation and Divine Support

A scroll of radiant light unfurls in the heavens, inscribed with divine truth. The angel points toward it, while Michael stands guard nearby, a vigilant protector. The horizon glows with the promise of future revelation, a dawn breaking over the destiny of Daniel’s people. The scene conveys assurance, divine authority, and the certainty of God’s plan unfolding despite opposition.
