Leviticus 20
The Call to Holiness and the Judgment on Defilement
To declare God’s sovereign demand for holiness among His people by setting boundaries against idolatry, immoral acts, and profanation, and to reveal the grave consequences of defiling His sanctuary and covenant community.
Leviticus 20 unfolds as a divine summons through Moses, commanding Israel to uphold sanctity by rejecting abominable practices such as child sacrifice to Molech, spiritism, and various forbidden sexual relations. The chapter pronounces death as the penalty for these transgressions, underscoring God’s fierce opposition to defilement and His desire to separate His people from the corrupt customs of surrounding nations. It culminates in a call to obedience that preserves the land’s blessing and maintains Israel’s distinctiveness as God’s holy possession.
Event Description
God commands Moses to warn Israel against giving their children to Molech, a pagan deity associated with child sacrifice. Such acts defile the sanctuary and profane God's holy name. The penalty is death by stoning, and God declares He will set His face against those who persist or conceal these sins. Similarly, those who seek familiar spirits or wizards are condemned and to be cut off.

Cultural & Historical Context
Child sacrifice was practiced among some Canaanite peoples, representing a profound violation of life and covenant loyalty. Spiritism and witchcraft were widespread pagan practices that threatened Israel’s purity. The emphasis on communal enforcement reflects the covenantal nature of Israel’s relationship with God (cf. Deuteronomy 13:6–11).

Judgment on Child Sacrifice and Spiritism (Verses 1–6, 27)
A shadowed altar with flickering flames, where innocent children’s cries are silenced by stones cast from a resolute community, while a fierce divine gaze pierces the darkness, setting apart the holy from the profane.
Capital Punishment for Sexual Immorality (Verses 7–21)
A tapestry of intertwined family lines, some frayed and broken by forbidden unions, contrasted with a radiant boundary of light that encircles the pure, symbolizing God’s protective holiness guarding relational sanctity.
The Call to Obedience and Separation (Verses 22–26)
A fertile land flowing with milk and honey, bordered by a clear, shimmering veil that separates it from a dark wilderness, embodying the divine promise and the sacred distinction of God’s chosen people.
Leviticus 20 Song
From ancient voice the warning came, Against the fire that steals the flame, No child shall fall to shadowed gods, Nor spirits’ lies defile our hearts.
No secret sin, no twisted bond, Shall break the ties that You have formed. Families kept pure and whole, Reflecting You in every soul.
Holy, holy, set apart, Guard the temple of the heart. By Your statutes we will stand, Called to walk in Your command.
Separate, O chosen race, From every false and dark embrace. Land that flows with milk and honey, Blessed by God, our King, our Glory.
Holy, holy, set apart, Guard the temple of the heart. By Your statutes we will stand, Forever held within Your hand.
