Micah 3
The Judgment on Corrupt Leaders and False Prophets
To expose the corruption and injustice of Israel’s leaders and prophets, reveal the consequences of their betrayal, and affirm God’s sovereign judgment against those who pervert justice and mislead His people.
Micah 3 confronts the leaders of Israel—heads, princes, priests, and prophets—who have abandoned justice and truth. Their greed and cruelty are laid bare: they exploit the people, distort equity, and deceive with false words. The chapter warns that God will hide His face and bring darkness upon these false prophets and corrupt rulers. Yet the prophet stands empowered by the Spirit of the LORD to declare the sins of Jacob and Israel, pronouncing the coming destruction of Zion and Jerusalem as the consequence of their iniquity.
Event Description
The prophet addresses the heads of Jacob and princes of Israel, calling them to recognize their duty to know and administer judgment rightly. Instead, they hate good and love evil, violently exploiting the people—plundering their skin and flesh, breaking their bones as if preparing them for a pot. Their cruelty is both physical and spiritual. When they cry out to the LORD, He will hide His face and not hear them, for their deeds have been evil.
Central Themes
Corruption and cruelty of leadership
Inversion of justice—hating good, loving evil
Divine rejection due to persistent evil deeds
Cultural & Historical Context
In ancient Israel, leaders bore the responsibility to uphold justice and protect the vulnerable. Their betrayal of this role was a grave offense, violating covenantal expectations (Exodus 23:6-8). The imagery of skin and bones being plucked evokes brutal oppression, reminiscent of social injustice condemned throughout the prophets (Isaiah 1:17; Jeremiah 22:3).
Micah 3:2
Corrupt Leaders Exploit the People (Verses 1–4)
A darkened throne room where rulers with harsh eyes tear away the skin and flesh of the vulnerable, their hands stained crimson. The people beneath them are broken, bones scattered like shattered pottery, while the rulers’ faces are hardened, blind to justice.
False Prophets Deceive and Prepare for War (Verses 5–7)
Prophets with snarling teeth and false smiles, their mouths proclaiming ‘Peace’ while shadows of conflict loom behind them. Their eyes gleam with greed as they bite into the truth, while a thick night descends, swallowing visions and silencing voices.
The Prophet’s Divine Empowerment and Pronouncement of Judgment (Verses 8–12)
A figure stands radiant with a fiery spirit, holding a scroll of judgment. Behind him, the city of Zion lies plowed and broken, ruins overgrown with wild forest. The temple mount, once holy, is shadowed and desolate, while the heavens above blaze with divine authority.
Micah 3 Song
Hear, O leaders, heads of Jacob, princes of Israel’s house, Is it not your task to know justice, to love what is right? Yet you hate the good, embrace the evil, Tearing the flesh of the people, breaking their bones in your greed.
False prophets bite with sharp teeth, crying peace to the lost, Yet war is prepared in their mouths, and truth is sold for gold. The seers will be ashamed, their lips sealed in silence, For God’s word will no longer come through their lies.
But the LORD will hide His face, He will not hear your cries, For your deeds are evil, your hearts are dark, Judgment comes like night, and no vision will shine.
But I stand filled with power, Spirit of the LORD within, To declare your sins, to call out your transgressions, Zion built with blood, Jerusalem with iniquity, The mountain of the house shall be desolate and wild.
Hear now, O Israel, the judgment is near, No bribe can save you, no false trust endure, The LORD’s justice is sure, His might will prevail, From ruin and darkness, His truth will arise.
