Nahum 1
The Fierce Justice and Sure Deliverance of the LORD
To reveal the character of God as a jealous and powerful avenger who executes righteous judgment against Nineveh, while also being a refuge and deliverer for those who trust Him.
Nahum 1 opens with a divine oracle against Nineveh, the capital of Assyria. The LORD is portrayed as a God of jealous wrath and great power, slow to anger yet unyielding in justice. His presence shakes creation itself, and His fury consumes the wicked. Yet amidst this fearsome judgment, God is also a stronghold and protector for His faithful people. The chapter closes with a promise of peace and restoration for Judah, as the oppressor is utterly cut off.

Cultural & Historical Context
Nineveh, the capital of the Assyrian empire, was known for its cruelty and oppression. Nahum’s prophecy reflects the historical reality of Assyria’s dominance and the hope for its downfall. The imagery of storms and earthquakes echoes ancient Near Eastern motifs of divine power over chaos, but here it is Yahweh alone who wields such authority (cf. Psalm 18:7-15; Exodus 15:8).
Nahum 1:2
The Jealous and Avenging God (Verses 1–6)
A tempestuous sky roars with swirling dark clouds and lightning, while mountains tremble and rivers recede beneath a towering figure whose feet stir up dust like a whirlwind. Flames of divine fury blaze, consuming rocks and earth, embodying the unstoppable wrath of God.
God’s Justice and Protection (Verses 7–8)
A serene fortress stands firm amid raging floods and shadowy darkness pressing in from all sides. Within, a calm light glows, symbolizing God’s goodness and refuge for those who trust Him, contrasting with the chaos outside.
The Futility of Rebellion and the Promise of Restoration (Verses 9–15)
A field of dry, brittle stubble is consumed by a sweeping fire, while broken chains lie scattered. In the distance, a messenger’s feet tread softly over peaceful mountains, bearing a scroll of good news. Idols shatter and fade into dust, signifying the end of oppression and the dawn of peace.
Nahum 1 Song
God is jealous, fierce and strong, His vengeance swift, His anger long; The mountains quake beneath His might, The earth ablaze within His sight.
He dries the rivers, stills the sea, Breaks the yoke and sets us free; The wicked fall like stubble dry, Darkness chases, none can fly.
Who can stand before His wrath? Who can face the fiery path? Yet to those who trust His name, He is refuge, strong and same.
Though foes arise with evil schemes, God’s justice flows like mighty streams; His peace will come, His word is sure, The faithful safe, their hope secure.
