Proverbs 16
The Sovereignty of the Lord in the Heart and Conduct of Man
To reveal the divine sovereignty over human intentions and actions, emphasizing the necessity of humility, righteousness, wisdom, and trust in the Lord as the foundation for life and leadership.
Proverbs 16 unfolds as a profound meditation on the interplay between human planning and divine sovereignty. It declares that while man prepares and devises, it is the LORD who ultimately directs the outcome. The chapter contrasts pride and humility, wickedness and righteousness, folly and wisdom, illustrating the moral and spiritual consequences that flow from the heart’s posture. It also highlights the role of just leadership and the blessings of peace and favor that come from walking in the fear of the LORD.
Event Description
The chapter opens with the profound truth that the preparations of the heart and the responses of the tongue originate from the LORD. Though man may see his ways as pure, God weighs the spirit, discerning the hidden motives. Commitment of one’s works to the LORD secures established thoughts, for all things are made for His purpose, including the wicked for the day of evil. Pride is an abomination, and mercy, truth, and the fear of the LORD purge iniquity and turn men from evil. When a man’s ways please the LORD, even his enemies are made at peace with him.

The fear of the LORD, a foundational biblical theme, is presented as the antidote to evil and pride. This section echoes themes from Psalms and Job regarding God's omniscience and justice (Psalm 33:11; Job 34:12).
