Isaiah 6 · Berean Standard Bible
1In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted; and the train of His robe filled the temple. 2Above Him stood seraphim, each having six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. 3And they were calling out to one another: “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts; all the earth is full of His glory.” 4At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook, and the temple was filled with smoke. 5Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined, because I am a man of unclean lips dwelling among a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the LORD of Hosts.” 6Then one of the seraphim flew to me, and in his hand was a glowing coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7And with it he touched my mouth and said: “Now that this has touched your lips, your iniquity is removed and your sin is atoned for.” 8Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying: “Whom shall I send? Who will go for Us?” And I said: “Here am I. Send me!” 9And He replied: “Go and tell this people, ‘Be ever hearing, but never understanding; be ever seeing, but never perceiving.’ 10Make the hearts of this people calloused; deafen their ears and close their eyes. Otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed.” 11Then I asked: “How long, O Lord?” And He replied: “Until the cities lie ruined and without inhabitant, until the houses are left unoccupied and the land is desolate and ravaged, 12until the LORD has driven men far away and the land is utterly forsaken. 13And though a tenth remains in the land, it will be burned again. As the terebinth and oak leave stumps when felled, so the holy seed will be a stump in the land.”

Isaiah 6

The Vision of the Holy One and the Commission of the Prophet

✦
Objective

To reveal the majestic holiness of God, the prophet’s recognition of personal sinfulness, the purifying grace that prepares for service, and the solemn commission to proclaim judgment with a remnant hope.

Overview

Isaiah’s vision opens in the year King Uzziah died, a moment of national uncertainty. He beholds the LORD enthroned in glory, surrounded by seraphim declaring divine holiness. Overwhelmed by his unclean lips among an unclean people, Isaiah is purified by a live coal from the altar. God then calls for a messenger; Isaiah volunteers. His mission is to speak to a people hardened against hearing and seeing the truth, destined for desolation, yet a holy remnant will remain to renew the land.

The glory of God filling all creation

Cultural & Historical Context

King Uzziah’s death marked political instability in Judah. Isaiah’s vision contrasts earthly uncertainty with divine transcendence. The triple 'holy' echoes the Hebrew emphasis on God’s perfect purity (cf. Revelation 4:8). Seraphim, fiery angelic beings, symbolize divine purity and service (cf. Exodus 3:2, 1 Kings 6:23-28). The temple setting underscores God’s presence among His people.

The Prophet’s Confession and Purification (Verses 5–7)

Isaiah standing humbled, eyes wide with awe and fear, lips trembling as a glowing coal, fiery and pure, is gently touched to them by a winged seraph. A cleansing light radiates from the coal, washing away shadows of guilt and sin, preparing Isaiah for holy service.

The Divine Commission and the Hardening of the People (Verses 8–10)

Isaiah, resolute and willing, steps forward amidst a darkened crowd whose eyes are veiled, ears heavy, and hearts hardened like stone. The prophet’s voice rises alone against the silence, a lone beacon of truth in a sea of spiritual blindness.

The Duration of Judgment and the Promise of a Remnant (Verses 11–13)

A devastated landscape of ruined cities and barren fields under a gray sky. Yet from a scorched tree stump, tender green shoots emerge, glowing softly, symbolizing the holy seed—the preserved remnant destined to bring renewal and life.
