Isaiah 66
The Sovereign Majesty and Final Judgment of the LORD
To reveal the transcendent sovereignty of God over all creation, His call for genuine humility and reverence, the promise of restoration for the faithful, and the certainty of judgment upon the rebellious as the new heavens and new earth are established.
Isaiah 66 proclaims the LORD’s supreme authority as Creator and Judge. It contrasts empty ritual with true devotion, promises joy and comfort to the contrite, and foretells a dramatic divine intervention bringing both salvation and judgment. The chapter culminates in the vision of a restored Jerusalem, universal worship, and the eternal fate of the wicked.
Event Description
The LORD declares heaven as His throne and earth as His footstool, emphasizing His incomparable majesty and the futility of human attempts to build Him a dwelling. He turns His gaze to the humble and contrite who tremble at His word, contrasting them with those who offer meaningless sacrifices and delight in abominations. God pronounces judgment on those who reject His call and persist in evil.

Cultural & Historical Context
In ancient Israel, temple worship was central, but Isaiah challenges superficial religiosity, echoing prophetic calls elsewhere (Amos 5:21-24; Micah 6:6-8). The imagery of heaven as throne and earth as footstool recalls God’s universal dominion (Psalm 103:19).

The Promise of Joy and Comfort for God’s Faithful (Verses 5–14)
A mother’s gentle embrace enveloping a joyful city bathed in golden light, rivers flowing abundantly, and diverse peoples gathering in peace, their faces lifted in gladness and hope.
The Coming Judgment and Purification by Fire (Verses 15–17)
A whirlwind of fire descending from stormy skies, consuming false altars and idols, while a clear path of purified light shines toward a distant holy mountain.
The Gathering of Nations and the Universal Worship (Verses 18–23)
A multitude from every nation and tongue converging on a radiant Jerusalem, bearing offerings and clad in priestly garments, united in solemn worship beneath a sky of eternal stars.
The Eternal Judgment of the Wicked and the New Creation (Verses 24)
A stark valley where lifeless bodies lie, surrounded by unquenchable fire and crawling worms, contrasted with a luminous horizon revealing a new heaven and earth, vibrant and everlasting.
Isaiah 66 Song
The heavens are Your throne, O LORD, the earth beneath Your feet, No house can hold Your glory, no place can make You rest complete. Yet You look upon the humble, the broken in their heart, Those who tremble at Your word, from You will never depart.
Before the travail comes the birth, a nation born anew, Zion’s children rise in strength, a promise sure and true. Gentiles stream like flowing waters, drawn to sacred ground, All flesh shall worship, in unity profound.
Rejoice, O faithful, in the LORD’s great peace, Like rivers flowing, His comfort will not cease. From sorrow to joy, from mourning to light, He lifts His servants to eternal heights.
But fire shall come with fury, a whirlwind’s blazing sword, To purge the false and wicked, to honor the living LORD. False sanctity consumed, their works and thoughts laid bare, Yet those who seek the LORD shall find His tender care.
Rejoice, O faithful, in the LORD’s great peace, Like rivers flowing, His comfort will not cease. From sorrow to joy, from mourning to light, He lifts His servants to eternal heights. The new heavens and earth forever stand, In the mighty hand of the LORD, our God and King of all the land.
