Psalms 115
The Glory of God Alone and the Futility of Idols
To exalt the LORD as the sovereign God worthy of all glory, to contrast His living presence with the impotence of idols, and to call His people to trust and praise Him alone.
Psalm 115 stands as a solemn declaration that glory belongs not to human effort but to God's name, for His steadfast mercy and truth. It confronts the idolatry of the nations by exposing the lifelessness of their idols, while affirming the living God enthroned in heaven who accomplishes all His will. The psalm urges Israel, the priests, and all who fear the LORD to place their trust fully in Him, who is their help and shield. It closes with a confident blessing upon God's people, reminding them of their unique possession of the earth, unlike the dead who cannot praise Him. The psalm is a call to worship that centers on the LORD’s incomparable nature and the futility of trusting anything else.
Event Description
The psalmist opens with a humble declaration: not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to Your name give glory because of Your mercy and truth. This is a rejection of human pride and a redirection of honor to God alone. The psalmist anticipates the taunt of the nations questioning the presence of Israel’s God. Yet the response is confident: our God is in the heavens and does whatever He pleases, sovereign over all.

Cultural & Historical Context
In the ancient Near East, nations often questioned the power of foreign gods when their people were defeated or oppressed. This psalm confronts such skepticism by affirming Yahweh’s supreme authority above all earthly powers and gods, echoing themes found in Isaiah 45:7 and Daniel 4:35.
Psalm 115:1
Glory to God, Not to Us (Verses 1–3)
A vast, radiant throne set high above the clouds, shining with unapproachable light. Below, a multitude of nations gaze upward in awe and silence, while a humble figure bows low, hands lifted in surrender, directing all praise upward to the name inscribed in blazing letters.
The Futility of Idols (Verses 4–8)
A gallery of lifeless statues crafted from silver and gold, their eyes hollow and mouths sealed. Dust settles on them as shadows stretch long, while behind them, faint echoes of human hands shape and mold, yet the figures remain cold and motionless, unable to respond or move.
A Call to Trust in the LORD (Verses 9–11)
A shield emblazoned with the LORD’s name held firm in the hands of a diverse assembly—priests, elders, and common folk—standing united on a rocky hill, their faces turned confidently toward a bright horizon where the sun rises over a peaceful land.
God’s Blessing on His People (Verses 12–16)
A lush valley beneath a vast sky, children playing freely, elders blessing the young, and a gentle light descending from heaven like a soft rain, touching the earth and all who dwell upon it, symbolizing God’s mindful blessing and provision.
The Living Praise the LORD (Verses 17–18)
A vibrant assembly of worshippers lifting voices and hands in joyous song beneath a canopy of stars. Their praises rise like incense into the night sky, while shadows of silence fall over a distant, darkened realm where no voices sound.
Psalms 115 Song
Not unto us, O LORD, not unto us, but to Your name alone, For mercy flows and truth endures, Your glory brightly shown. The nations mock, but You remain enthroned beyond the skies, Doing all Your sovereign will, majestic and most wise.
Silver and gold, lifeless forms, with eyes that cannot see, Mouths that cannot speak a word, deaf ears that cannot plea. Those who trust in empty gods become like what they make, But we will trust the LORD alone, our refuge and our stake.
Glory to God, the living King, Not to idols carved by hand. Trust in Him, our shield and strength, He holds the earth and heavens grand.
He blesses those who fear His name, From small to great, His grace extends. He gives the earth to humankind, And life that praise and never ends.
Glory to God, the living King, Forevermore our voices raise. Not to idols carved by hand, But to the LORD our songs of praise.
