Psalms 94 · Berean Standard Bible
1O LORD, God of vengeance, O God of vengeance, shine forth. 2Rise up, O Judge of the earth; render a reward to the proud. 3How long will the wicked, O LORD, how long will the wicked exult? 4They pour out arrogant words; all workers of iniquity boast. 5They crush Your people, O LORD; they oppress Your heritage. 6They kill the widow and the foreigner; they murder the fatherless. 7They say, “The LORD does not see; the God of Jacob pays no heed.” 8Take notice, O senseless among the people! O fools, when will you be wise? 9He who affixed the ear, can He not hear? He who formed the eye, can He not see? 10He who admonishes the nations, does He not discipline? He who teaches man, does He lack knowledge? 11The LORD knows the thoughts of man, that they are futile. 12Blessed is the man You discipline, O LORD, and teach from Your law, 13to grant him relief from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked. 14For the LORD will not forsake His people; He will never abandon His heritage. 15Surely judgment will again be righteous, and all the upright in heart will follow it. 16Who will rise up for me against the wicked? Who will stand for me against the workers of iniquity? 17Unless the LORD had been my helper, I would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence. 18If I say, “My foot is slipping,” Your loving devotion, O LORD, supports me. 19When anxiety overwhelms me, Your consolation delights my soul. 20Can a corrupt throne be Your ally— one devising mischief by decree? 21They band together against the righteous and condemn the innocent to death. 22But the LORD has been my stronghold, and my God is my rock of refuge. 23He will bring upon them their own iniquity and destroy them for their wickedness. The LORD our God will destroy them.

Psalms 94

The Justice of God Against the Triumph of the Wicked

✦
Objective

To reveal the psalmist’s urgent plea for God’s righteous judgment upon the proud and wicked who oppress His people, affirming God’s omniscient justice and His faithful defense of the righteous.

Overview

Psalm 94 is a fervent cry to God as the righteous Judge of the earth. The psalmist laments the apparent triumph of the wicked who oppress the vulnerable and mock God’s justice. Yet, he calls upon God to act decisively, reminding the foolish that God sees all and knows the vanity of human schemes. The psalm closes with a confident declaration of God as the refuge and defender of the righteous, who will repay the wicked according to their deeds.

Detailed Analysis

Event Description

The psalmist opens with an urgent invocation to the LORD, the God to whom vengeance belongs, to reveal Himself as the righteous judge. He beseeches God to rise and render recompense to the proud who oppress His people. The wicked are described as boastful, speaking harsh words and violently breaking the community of God’s heritage, slaying widows, strangers, and fatherless children. Despite their cruelty, they arrogantly claim that God neither sees nor regards their deeds.

Central Themes

Divine justice and vengeance

the arrogance and impunity of the wicked

oppression of the vulnerable

the call for God’s intervention.

Cultural & Historical Context

In the ancient Near Eastern context, widows, strangers, and orphans were among the most vulnerable, often subject to injustice. The psalmist’s appeal reflects the covenantal expectation that God defends the oppressed and punishes the proud who defy His law (Exodus 22:22-24; Deuteronomy 10:18). The wicked’s claim that God does not see echoes a common human presumption of divine indifference, which the psalmist vehemently rejects.

Key Verse

O LORD God, to whom vengeance belongeth; O God, to whom vengeance belongeth, shew thyself. — Psalm 94:1

Vivid Artistic Descriptions

The Plea for Divine Vengeance (Verses 1–7)

A darkened courtroom where a righteous judge rises from a throne of fire, eyes blazing with justice, as shadows of proud oppressors loom but shrink before His presence. The vulnerable—widows, orphans, strangers—stand in the judge’s protective light, their faces hopeful yet weary.

God’s Omniscience and the Folly of the Wicked (Verses 8–11)

An all-seeing eye carved from living stone watches over a vast landscape where foolish men stumble blindly. Around them, invisible threads connect their vain thoughts to the eye, which pierces through darkness and falsehood with unyielding clarity.

Blessing for the Chastened and Assurance of God’s Faithfulness (Verses 12–15)

A weary traveler resting beneath a sheltering tree, its roots deep and strong, symbolizing God’s law. Rays of gentle light break through storm clouds, offering peace and rest amid adversity, while distant mountains bear the promise of justice returning like a rising dawn.

The Cry for Vindication and God’s Deliverance (Verses 16–19)

A lone figure on a cliff’s edge, foot slipping on loose stones, reaching upward toward a hand of mercy extended from radiant clouds. Around him swirl dark storms of doubt and fear, but the hand holds steady, lifting him toward calm skies.

The Incompatibility of God with Wickedness and the Promise of Justice (Verses 20–23)

A towering throne forged from twisted iron and shadow, crumbling beneath the weight of its own corruption. Nearby, a solid rock stands firm amid crashing waves, sheltering a faithful figure who looks upward with trust as lightning of justice strikes the throne, shattering it.

Song

Psalms 94 Song

Verse 1

O Lord, to whom vengeance belongs, arise and show Your power strong; Judge the proud who scorn Your ways, defend the weak amid their wrong. They boast and break Your chosen ones, slay widows, orphans in the night, Yet say You see them not at all—O God, reveal Your holy might.

Verse 2

Fools, when will you understand? The Maker formed your ear and eye; He knows the vanity of man, no scheme or plot can hide or fly. He chastens nations with His hand, and teaches all in wisdom’s way; The upright follow righteousness, and in His truth they stay.

Chorus

You hear the silent cries, You see the hidden lies; No thought escapes Your gaze, Your justice will amaze. Blessed are those You teach, who find in You their peace; Your law restores the heart, until the wicked part.

Bridge

When my soul was near to silence, Your mercy held me fast; In the storm of many thoughts, Your comforts come at last. Who will stand against the wrong? You, O Lord, my rock and shield; You repay the wicked’s deeds, their fate forever sealed.
